A far less historic title from the long running Total War franchise, Total War: Warhammer introduces the Games Workshop license of Warhammer Fantasy Battles to the series. The first title in a planned trilogy takes place in The Old World, and features four base races in addition to four additional DLC races. Upon release of both the second and third titles in the series, the maps will start to combine for owners of multiple games into a much larger grand campaign.
The Old World map represented in the first title covers the southern tip of the Chaos Wastes in the far north to the southern Badlands below the Border Princes and Greenskin homes. In the far western reaches of the map lay the Bretonnian factions, and in the far east are the various Dwarfs in their mountain homes.
Default Playable Races
The Empire - Human faction modeled after 15th century Germany. A renaissance army, where longswords and halberds go hand in hand with cannons and steam tanks straight out of Da Vinci's drawing board. The standard units are supplemented with hero units (such as Witch Hunters and the Emperor himself), powerful mages and magical beasts, such as demigryphs.
Orcs - Tribal and unorganized greenskins who live to pillage and wage war on each other and the neighboring lands. Come together as a (somewhat) coherent army when WAAGH, a crusade against a larger foe is called upon. The orc faction utilizes a "clap-your-hands-if-you-believe" principle in its tactics and the army consists of such interesting units as a Doomdiver Catapult (a catapult that shoots goblins on paragliders) and Giants that spit acid on their foes.
Dwarfs - A classic portrayal on the well known fantasy dwarf - a declining old race that has its Golden Age behind it, now living in the dwindling communities closed in old mountain forts. Dwarfs are a technologically advanced race that fight a losing war against the invading Orcs and rat-like Skaven who lurk in the shadows.
Vampire Counts - An army of undead led by powerful, centuries-old vampires. The standard vampire army comprises of disposable, mindless hordes of zombies and ghouls supplemented by powerful creatures of the night and the vampire lords themselves.
DLC Playable Races
Chaos - A horde marching forth from the northern Chaos Wastes, Chaos consists of various barbarians and horrors following Archaon the Everchosen as he leads his armies south in order to exterminate all other races from the Old World.
Beastmen - Warped by chaos, the beastmen are a horde race that focus on raiding wherever they travel. Armed with powerful minotaurs and cygors, the beastmen are a heavy hitting race that focus on gathering momentum and using it to smash their foes.
Wood Elves - Traditional fantasy elves that live in harmony with nature, the wood elves have a centralized building chain around The World Tree and focus on ranged and light infantry with an emphasis on hit and run tactics.
Bretonnia - Modeled after medieval France, this faction consists of many chivalrous knights, as well as their peasant followers.
Norsca - Northern barbarians modeled closely after vikings, these brutish men live almost entirely off raiding other races for profit. Beyond their frequent raids, they also organize monster hunts in order to slay the many great beasts of the Old World.
Gameplay changes
For the first time in the history of Total War franchise, the player will be able to use flying units and field magic users and other single hero units in battle.
