    Overview

Black Mesa is a sci-fi first-person shooter developed and published digitally by Crowbar Collective for the PC and Linux (both via Steam) on March 6, 2020. An earlier version was originally released as a free download on September 14, 2012, and a more final version of the game was then released in Steam Early Access on May 5, 2015.

Based on Valve's 1998 game Half-Life, Black Mesa recreates the game from the ground-up with enhanced graphics, physics simulation, and level design, as well as new original voice acting and musical score. It makes use of the latest version of Valve's Source engine and also features an updated multiplayer component. It was released commercially with Valve's blessing.

Work on the game began in 2004 as a free project to overhaul Valve's own attempt at bringing Half-Life to the Source engine (as the port Half-Life: Source), which received only minor improvements to the original. Originally known as Black Mesa: Source, the project was widely regarded as vaporware due to its lengthy development. After its first public release in 2012, the project was one of the first titles in the Steam Greenlight program and became a commercial product using an up-to-date licensed version of the Source engine.
